Why is puppy socialization so important?

A young brain has incredible neuroplasticity and therefore puppyhood is the most advantageous time to help them safely learn about the world around them and to help them learn healthy and appropriate ways to react and respond to novel objects and circumstances in their environment. Exposure isn’t enough.

A lack of positive socialization during puppyhood is a leading causes of behavior problems for dogs in adult life.

Can I Enroll My Older than 20 Week Puppy?

Unfortunately we cannot make exceptions for puppies who are older than 20 weeks. We know your puppy is pawsome, but they are in a very different developmental transition after 20 weeks and play styles change dramatically. Older puppies may put younger ones at risk of having a bad experience and forming negative associations.

Great news! Our Puppy 101:Foundations Class accepts puppies up to 20 weeks old at the start of the class.

New to Socialization? Or Is your Puppy struggling with it?

During the age of around eight to twenty weeks, we recommend everyone explore a safe classroom setting Puppy Social run by Certified Professional Dog Trainers. However, in our experience, the classroom setting is not always a successful starting point for socialization for every puppy. Every dog is different! During this developmental age your puppy may not enjoy or feel safe enough to learn in a classroom setting right away. We may have to build up to it. The classroom setting is a valuable tool and is definitely worth trying. That said, if you see ANY persistent signs of stress behavior or if your puppy cannot be soothed, you can and should take a break from the lesson with your puppy. If it is still not working for you and your puppy, we recommend going home early. Please try to speak with one of the trainers for support before you leave.

If you or your puppy is struggling we will gladly provide alternative resources and recommendations to help socialize your puppy in alternative ways.
